Sukhothai was the capital of Thailand for a short, brilliant period from 1238 to 1376. It united the Thai people into one nation and left a rich artistic heritage. The ruins of the old city stand 58 km north-west of Phitsanulok and form the Sukhothai Historical Park, one of the most visited ancient cities.
There are few hotels near the old city, so most visitors stay in New Sukhothai, a market town 12 km to the east on the Yom river. It is small and friendly, has good restaurants and guesthouses, and is quiet even in the tourist season. From there it is easy to reach the Ramkhamhaeng National Park and the ruins of Si Satchanalai and Kamphaeng Phet.
The park is the best place in Thailand to see the Loy Krathong festival of lights, which lasts nine days in October and November. All hotels are full then, so book a room early.
