Lopburi is the monkey city, popular with tourists, 140 km north of Bangkok. It has an old part and a new part, and nearly all sights are in the old one. A railway station links it to Bangkok and Chiang Mai.
Phra Prang Sam Yot, three Khmer-period towers in the style of Angkor Wat, is the symbol of the city. Most of the long-tailed monkeys live around it and in the shrine opposite, which is the only place where feeding them is officially allowed. Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat also recalls the Khmer time with a fine prang; the temple was the central sanctuary, and the complex covers 3 hectares.
For the history of the city, visit the museum in the palace that Phra Narai Ratcha Niwet built for King Narai in 1665. It has a large collection of ancient art, weapons and objects.
