Koh Kret is a quiet day trip for those who are tired of elephant rides, night clubs and big malls. Go on a weekday to avoid crowds: the island opens at about 09:00 and closes at 17:30. It lies in Pak Kret district of Nonthaburi, 20 to 30 km north of Bangkok.
It is a man-made island, cut off in 1722 when a canal was widened, with 4.2 square kilometres in the middle of the Chao Phraya river, and it is the closest island to the capital. Mon people settled here hundreds of years ago and still keep some old traditions. There are no wide roads and no cars: locals walk, cycle or use motorbikes.
What to see
Wat Poramaiyikawas is a royal temple with a Mon-style pagoda that holds relics of the Buddha, murals in Thai patterns and fine door panels. Wat Sao Thong Thong has a pagoda shaped like a star fruit that exists nowhere else in Thailand.
The trip is not complete without Mon dishes, a choice of desserts and a visit to a pottery shop; some of them show how pots are made and let you try. Food stalls and craft shops line a narrow path, and many people end the walk with a drink on the river bank.
